The results of investigating the structure of tool steels in the initial state and subjected to glow discharge treatment are presented. It was found that the glow discharge treatment leads to disintegration and redistribution of the carbide phase in the surface layer up to 90 microns deep, which results in an increase in microhardness up to 15…30 %. The theoretical calculations performed made it possible to determine the depth of the skin layer that is formed during processing in the range of 70…120 microns.
