It is shown that in the presence of a galvanic cell in the circuit, the difference in the localization of fields of «external» and electrical forces should be taken into account. In the EMF source, the «external force» performs the work of transferring the charge against the force of the electric field created by it. In an unloaded source, the specified work divided by the amount of charge transferred determines the EMF. The formulas obtained by the existing method refer to different electrical circuits. At the same time, the proposed approach leads to similar formulas describing two sections of the same chain. EMF is defined as the sum of the voltage between the source electrodes and the potential drop across its internal resistance.
