Abstract:
A generalized model of elementary processes in the «cold» cathode region of the welding arc is based on known experimental data obtained while studying the transition from a glow discharge to an arc discharge. The ideas that form the basis of this model are as follows: the source of free electrons is the metal cathode of the welding arc; electrons leave the «cold» cathode as a result of the action of the electric field of space charges and heating; the generation of free charge carriers in the gas occurs as a result of ionization due to the energy of the electric field. It is shown that the generalized model can explain large values of the discharge current in the case of «cold» cathodes. The results of estimated calculations of the arc current with a steel cathode at a temperature of T = 2500 K are close to the known experimental data.
