Abstract:
The article deals with the study of the opinions of lawyers, scientists, journalists, deputies of the First State Duma on the existence and application of the death penalty in the Russian Empire in 1905–1907. The liberal approach was based on the demand for the abolition of the death penalty of political prisoners, criticism of the use of the death penalty in circumvention of legislation, evidence of threat to the state structure by application of the death penalty. Conservative politicians accepted the existence of the death penalty as a means of deterring revolutionary demonstrations and anti-government agitation. The position of right-wing conservative figures is characterized by support and often initiation of extrajudicial application of the death penalty.
